The cover of Feliz Navidad - a traditional Spanish song is pure Radio One - upbeat, fun and an amazing Vocoder lead vocal whilst Where's Bill Grundy Now adds bounce and pop to a legendary DIY classic. The Covers of Love Me Tender and Big Rock Candy Mountain strip things back to show the more delicate and tender side of Shame, which is often seen. This EP is an absolute treat! XL Recordings label head and producer Richard Russell released his 12-track debut full-length project Everything Is Recorded in early 2018 featuring a revolving cast of guest collaborators such as Sampha, Kamasi Washington, and many more. After a run of live shows in London supporting the album, Russell decided to get back into the studio. This time, he brought in new and returning guests like Sampha, Ibeyi, Scritti Politti’s Green Gartside, Mela Murder, Obongjayar, and more for a new EP called 8AM. Live at Lincoln Hall is the first ever live album from Houston-based trio Khruangbin recorded over two nights at Lincoln Hall in Chicago. The six songs last almost 40 minutes and include the 11 minute plus centrepiece, “People Everywhere”. Their unique, psychedelic vibe and unique sound comprised of spoken word, faint vocal melodies, and impeccably performed guitar solos. It's super relaxed, smouldering, and simply stunning. It’s rare that a band’s first full-length debut album sounds as confident and self-assured as Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever’s Hope Downs. The Melbourne quintet released ten songs of urgent and passionate guitar pop that elicit warm memories of bands past, from the Go-Betweens’ jangle to the charmingly lo-fi trappings of New Zealand’s Flying Nun label. Their Live @ KEXP session was recorded post-debut-release in Spring 2018 at The KEXP Seattle radio station. The band performed 3-tracks from their debut album and a choice cut from their 2nd EP, French Press to make up the 4 songs on their live session EP. Limited to 700 Copies.

Following the release of two killer EPs (Talk Tight and The French Press), Melbourne quintet Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever is back with their first full-length album, Hope Downs. Their distinct, upbeat, locomotive rhythm created by their trio of singer-guitarists—Tom Russo, Fran Keaney, and Joe White, effortlessly elicits the picture of open sunroofs and beach getaways. Innerland is the first ever solo album by Engineers co-founder / songwriter and Ulrich Schnauss collaborator Mark Peters. Originally released as a low-key limited-edition cassette late last year, it has now been relandscaped into a larger-scale, eight-track album and gets a full release on vinyl and CD. This collection of instrumentals nods to Brian Eno, Talk Talk, Richard Thompson, Vini Reilly and Felt’s Maurice Deebank. It highlights Mark’s incredible musicianship, positioning his guitar rather than his voice as the focal point of the music. Available on Rough Trade Exclusive White Vinyl.

Originally available as a limited-edition bonus CD for the album’s release back in March, 8-track Ambient Innerland is an exclusive new version of Innerland – the debut solo album by former Engineers man Mark Peters – which strips away all of the percussion, leaving just the atmospheric layers of guitar and synths. This new rendition of the Innerland album positions Peters’ guitar rather than his voice as the focal point of the music. Available on Transparent Ochre Vinyl. Limited to 250 Copies.

Oh Sees spawned another frothy album of head-destroying psych-epics to grok and rock out to. With a fresh dollop of organ and keyboard prowess courtesy of Memory Of A Cut Off Head-alum and noted key-stabber Tom Dolas, there’s a fresh heavy-prog vibe that fits comfortably like a worn-in jean jacket. The Oh Sees 11-minute 12" single Dead Medic was culled from some longer jams during the Orc Sessions (one of which is a cover of a most excellent old school Swedish band called Träd Gräs Och Stenar). Available on Standard Black 12" Vinyl in 'Island Copper' foil-stamped matte-texture brown sleeve exclusively to Rough Trade and Castle Face mail order.

Originally given away free with subscribers to the Mojo Magazine, we now have a few more. C 7” Flexis for sale. The flexi showcases The Oh Sees ability to tap into jazzier, Can-like territory without ever diminishing their ferocity and thrust. Knoxville, Tennessee-bred Yves Tumor's latest release Safe in the Hands of Love is dissonant, sultry and everything in between. Yves' rolling, layered beats shuffle and dance around, stop, start and sway around you with mischievous intent to your ears. Golden honey-toned violins tie the breakbeat-ridden rhythms in knots and flirt with the vocals. It's pop, but not as you’ve ever known it. XL boss Richard Russell's larger than life pan-collaboration effort with his favourite artists worldwide is everything it could and should be. Drawing influences from his fellow contributors, previous encounters and the music scenes he has helped carve out in XL's near 30 year history. The album fulfils it's monstrous potential, effortlessly slaloming between haunting dub, lush neo-Soul and glitchy electronica. Global in sound. London in feel. It's like Russell had one big party last February, invited all his friends and recorded the entire thing. Then again, everything is recorded.

3. IDLES - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/idles-joy-as-an-act-of-resistance">Joy As An Act Of Resistance </a>

IDLES may just be the most important band to come out of Britain right now. Cutting through the bullshit of our modern dystopia. Tackling every cancer of this sceptered isle whether it's toxic masculinity on 'Samaritans', nationalism on 'Danny Nedelko' and 'Great', the establishment on 'Gram Rock', aggressive culture on 'Never Fight a Man With a Perm' the list goes on. But with earthquake-like subtlety the guitars swirl and scream, the drums explode and the bass throbs, to remind us that the greatest act of resistance is joy.

4. Khruangbin - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/con-todo-el-mundo">Con Todo El Mundo </a>

It was only a matter of time before the 70s-Thai-funk revivalist movement happened, we all saw this coming a mile off. Wrong. After completely blind siding the entire planet (except for Thailand maybe) in 2015, Khruangbin released their follow-up this year and we can't get enough of this psychedelic trio from, Bangkok *checks notes*, I mean Houston. Utterly atmospheric, furiously funky and an instant "who the hell is that" feeling. Who's looking forward to hearing Justin Bieber's 70s-Thai-funk album due out sometime next year?

5. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/rolling-blackouts-coastal-fever-hope-downs">Hope Downs </a>

Soon our to 10 will be purely devoted to cool Aussie bands, but for now we only have 2. Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever's debut is a laid-back landscape painting of living on the Victoria Coast. We at Rough Trade haven't heard a debut album so assured, level-headed and true in many years. Perceptive and satirical lyrics ride the swell of jangly surf-rock in beautiful harmony.

Stark, fragile and uncompromising in its pursuit of a feeling, Blumberg stares into the darkness of his soul and is unafraid to delve into it. Laying bare his most challenging emotions, creating sonic portraits of his demons whilst finding the space to write achingly beautiful pieces that you can't help but feel a connection to.

7. Goat Girl - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/goat-girl-goat-girl">Goat Girl </a>

If you haven't heard, South London is where it's at and Goat Girl are another shining example of that. Psych-garage with caustic but sentimental lyrics and bluesy guitars and climactic crescendos. Their debut album kicks you in the shin, slaps you round the face and then gives you a big hug we're totally into it. Janis Joplin would be proud.

8. Mark Peters - <a target="_blank" href="https://www.roughtrade.com/us/music/mark-peters-innerland">Innerland </a>

Rushing, swirling with all the energy of a gale-force wind. Mark Peters' first solo album is a romantic, emotional but real depiction of untamed and natural Britain, like an early Turner piece. This not ambient as you know it, it is tempestuous, rugged and wild.

Courtney Barnett is sick of your shit but we ain't sick of hers. Tell Me How You Really Feel is more outward looking than her last record, written by someone who is more confident on her platform, understands her reach and the responsibility to tell the world how she really feels. Fortunately for us all, her music is as punchy and self-assured as her new outlook on life.

Embracing and satirizing prog-rock, Oh Sees continue to apply their magic to everything they touch, and this one fits comfortably like a worn-in jean jacket. Unapologetically over-the-top from the 12 minute epic 'Anthemic Aggressor', to the apocalyptic album cover.

Young South London alt-rock alchemists forge pure and passionate guitar-frenzied post-punk beauty from chaos on their debut album.

South Londoners Charlie Steen (sings), Sean Coyle-Smith &amp; Eddie Green (guitars), Charlie Forbes (drums) and Josh Finerty (bass) met in school, practised in Brixton (in the space that Fat White Family used (often borrowing their gear)) and ran their own club night (the beautifully monikered ‘Chimney Shitters’). This is their debut album - recorded at Rockfield in Wales - 10 perfect tracks in 10 days.

If you’ve ever had the good fortune to see an uber-exuberant live show from Shame you’ll be impressed at this album. How they’ve managed to capture, tame and implement the energy from those performances. Built on a world of finely aimed chaos this is a triumphant metamorphosis of fury into beauty. Shame thrives on confrontation. Whether it be the seething intensity crackling throughout debut LP Songs of Praise or the adrenaline-pumping chaos that unfolds at Shame’s shows, it’s all fueled by feeling. Comprised of vocalist Charlie Steen, guitarists Sean Coyle-Smith and Eddie Green, bassist John Finerty, and drummer Charlie Forbes, the London-based five-piece began as school boys. From the outset, Shame built the band up from a foundation of DIY ethos while citing The Fall and Wire among its biggest musical influences. Utilizing both the grit and sincerity of that musical background, Shame carved out a niche in the South London music scene and then barreled fearlessly into the angular, thrashing post-punk that would go on to make up Songs of Praise, their Dead Oceans debut. From Gold Hole, a tongue-in-cheek takedown of rock narcissism, to lead single Concrete detailing the overwhelming moment of realizing a relationship is doomed, to the frustrated Tasteless taking aim at the monotony of people droning through their day-to- day, Songs of Praise never pauses to catch its breath. For fans of The Chameleons, Early U2, Happy Mondays, Echo and the Bunnymen and Alternative TV.

"I consider myself a "music guy" so for someone to introduce me to something mind-blowing, that I have not heard of before, is a challenge (just ask my family/friends when they try to introduce me to new music)! Your January album of the month, Shame "Songs of Praise" is not only probably going to be my favorite album of the year, but it is steadily growing to be one of my all-time favorite albums! I describe them as the musical love-child of Johnny Rotten and Joe Strummer (I know, that is an image to have in your head, right?). From that moment that I received the album, I have probably listened to that album about 50 times! I even had the pleasure of seeing them live in a tiny basement venue with about 20-30 other lucky listeners... They didn't come out and see that there were so few people in the crowd, they came out as if they sold out largest venue in the city! From the first note of Dust On Trial, to their final song Gold Hole, they played with the intense energy that their album brings out! Old souls in very young bodies, as they seemed to have played together for 20 years, so I am EXTREMELY excited to see what they have in store for us next! This album is just amazing! I can't believe that One Rizla was the very first song they wrote together, because that song is such a finely polished punk-pop gem and Concrete is such a kick in the stomach with the singer and bassist trading off lyrics, as if the 2nd vocal was the singers subconscious!" - Josh Nerat, Rough Trade US Club Member
