One of the most sought after recordings in Sun-Ra's history, this double disc set documents a 1971 performance by Sun Ra and his Arkestra in a San Francisco warehouse, coupled with a Sun Ra lecture taped at UC Berkeley a month or so earlier. The first disc captures the concert and opens with a piece of symphonic jazz, which seems to rise and fall in a tidal motion as reeds and percussion swells and then dissipates away. The next piece is a 20-minute 'Declamation' with musical exchanges, meaning that Ra gives a soundbyte-driven polemic about black identity and more esoteric, astral concerns while wailing horns punctuate the speech. It's hypnotic, cultish stuff. Further into the set Ra solos with a Moog while earth-shaking percussion sets the scene for him, which leads into the two final tracks of the set 'Satellites Are Spinning' and 'Enlightenment', the latter of which painfully cuts out before its conclusion. I guess you can't complain too much about someone running out of tape back in 1971, it is after all very easy to be blas about these things in our current climate of portable hard disc recorders and such. The second disc is made up of the lecture The Black Man In The Cosmos which even captures the sound of Sun Ra's chalk on the blackboard. This release comes as the first volume in a new series called the 'Lost Reel Collection' - and this certainly marks a promising strting point. Excellent.
