if you thought interpol's major-label debut would be a radical departure from their past two efforts, think again. first single 'the heinrich maneuver' finds the band sticking to its tried-and-true formula. this is classic interpol, through-and-through. it's that storming delivery of banks' meaty rhythm guitar and the spiraling bass line courtesy of the dapper carlos dengler which lay the foundations for daniel kessler's sharp-as-the-suit-he-wears reverberated riffage. the end result is something that's relentlessly memorable, as well as joyous and life-affirming, though in a heartbroken, reflective sort of way. the cd single features the radio edit and instrumental of 'mammoth'.
